First-Year Review Packet

First Year Review

The First-Year Review process assesses each participant for acceptance into the Interior Design Program by examining cognitive thinking, understanding of the design process, craftsmanship skills, potential success in the program and the ability to meet a deadline under pressure.

The final selection of students to matriculate into the program is a decision of the Interior Design faculty. Successful applicants will be notified no later than June 1, 2014.

The review consists of two components:

  1. Individual project due Monday, April 7, 2014 by 4:00 pm
  2. Charette (mandatory participation) Friday, April 11, 2014 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm

Individual project overview

This assignment will help you gain an understanding of the correlation between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional design. Use the process steps to create new and unique designs by converting two-dimensional modules into three-dimensional forms. The elements and principles of design must be a strong component in your creative process and outcome.

The individual project review is blind to ensure a fair process, therefore please do not place your name on any of the projects, only on the information sheet and transcript.

Charette overview

Part two of this year's review will include a design charette. A charette is an intense collaborative session where designers meet to solve a given problem in an allotted amount of time. During the charette the review committee will be assessing your creativity, time management skills and ability to work in a team. Attendance at the charette is mandatory. Excused absence forms will be available on March 21 in the Interior Design office. Project details will not be given until 3:00 pm on Friday, April 11.

Project Submission

All work must fit inside the box which measures 24 L x 24 W x 24 H. Please pick up a box from the Interior Design office on March 21, 2014. No exceptions will be made on the box size. The review is blind to ensure a fair process, therefore please do not place your name on any of the projects, it should only be written on the information sheet and transcript. Place all items on the submission checklist inside the box and tape closed. Bring final project to the Interior Design Suite 320 by 4:00 pm Monday, April 7, 2014.

Submission of this completed form, the six process steps, and an unofficial transcript are due April 7, 2014 by 4:00 pm. If mailing, the packet must arrive on or before April 7, 2014. The Interior Design Suite 320 is located in the Family Life Building.
